Autonomous observations of gases, particles, and clouds from the Arctic sea ice

William Simpson

University of Alaska Fairbanks

We deployed fifteen autonomous Multiple-Axis Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS) sensors
on the Arctic sea ice, each of which drifted roughly a year reporting observations, often at multiple locations, over
the past five years. After a brief introduction to the method and its strengths and limitations, I will share scientific
findings on the role of heterogeneous chemistry and vertical mixing on bromine monoxide (BrO) events in the Arctic.
We have recently begun deriving cloud and aerosol vertical profiles from these observations and will highlight collaborative
opportunities for research between these ground-based observations, modeling, and satellite-based observations.
